Report Title: Global Landscape of Sodium-Ion Battery Technology

San Antonio, TX | May 2025 – At the 2025 Battery Council International (BCI) Convention in San Antonio, Shawn Peng, President of QuantumShield Technologies, delivered a compelling presentation on the global landscape of sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery technology, highlighting key trends in development, commercialization, and supply chain dynamics across Eastern and Western markets.
The presentation, titled “Global Landscape of Sodium-Ion Battery Technology: Development and Commercialization Trends in Eastern and Western Markets”, showcased sodium-ion batteries as a cost-effective, safe, and high-performance alternative to lithium-ion and lead-acid technologies—particularly considering growing supply chain constraints for critical materials like lithium and nickel.
Drawing on data from the Wood Mackenzie and Third China Sodium-Ion Technology Summit Forum, etc., Shawn outlined a potential market size exceeding 650 GWh and $50 billion within the next 10–20 years. Sodium-ion’s low-temperature resilience (maintaining 80–90% capacity at -20°C to -40°C), faster charging, and deep discharge capabilities were emphasized as key advantages for automotive and energy storage applications.
The talk also addressed cost and pricing trends, noting that sodium-ion battery pack costs are projected to fall below lithium and lead-acid equivalents by 2028, driven by decreasing material costs and scaling effects—especially in China. Shawn highlighted the need for sustainable raw material sourcing, emphasizing soda ash reserves as a critical enabler for sodium-ion adoption, and pointed to the United States’ leadership in soda ash resources as a strategic advantage.
QuantumShield’s vision is to pioneer sodium-ion solutions that deliver safer, greener, and more reliable energy storage for a global market. As the company continues its R&D and manufacturing efforts in California, QuantumShield remains committed to enabling a sustainable energy future.
